Electrodes also referred as Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) require several properties for optimum performance. The GDE must be electrically conductive and have good mass transport for products and reactants. An ideal GDE would have as high a surface area as possible with a uniform dispersion of catalyst attached to the surface.
The high surface area of GDE can be provided by porous media of a Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL). The GDL is typically composed of a sheet of carbon paper or cloth in which the carbon fibers are partially coated with Teflon. Gases diffuse rapidly through the pores in the GDL. In many cases, the inner surface of the GDL is coated with a thin layer of high-surface-area carbon, called the Microporous Layer (MPL). The microporous layer can help adjust the balance between water retention (needed to maintain membrane conductivity) and water release (needed to keep the pores open so gas can diffuse into the electrodes).

- A carbon fiber brush with a high specific surface area (surface area per volume) and an open structure to avoid fouling is especially used for Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) application.
- Titanium fifer paper (Titanium felt), being highly corrosion resistance in oxidizing acid environment, is suitable for electrolysis and flow battery applications
